Growing up in a rural area outside a small town in Texas, Jason Behrends experienced the mysteries and beauty of nature and went on to earn a PhD in science. Now a resident of Fredericksburg, he finds inspiration in science and his surroundings as he explores color, light, and texture with acrylic latex paint on canvas.
Inspired at a young age by his father Monroe, Jason was encouraged to explore art in all its forms. He was around 5 when his father taught him color mixing and the intricate techniques of oils to create his first landscape paintings. Discovering those skills early on piqued his interest and allowed his curiosity to run wild – especially with different paints that could create texture and offer a multi-dimensional experience. When he began working with acrylic paint, it completely changed his esthetic and allowed him the freedom to play and see different forms emerge as he creates. Most of his work starts with a sketch of a concept, perhaps an intriguing shape or a movement that sparks an image. Jason continues to explore the nature of movement to see where he can take it.
